Recreational Europe Report

Hanway Associates specialises in strategy and M&A advisory for the cannabis sector, helping companies launch, scale, and expand into new markets. The brief was to design a report examining the evolution of cannabis legislation and market development across Europe and North America. Structured across three chapters, the publication explores the current state of legalisation in Europe, key lessons from the development of regulated markets in North America, and potential future pathways for reform. The report forms part of a wider research series that includes The European Medical Cannabis Ecosystem, The European Cannabis Investment Ecosystem, and The Social Impact of Cannabis Legislation.

The key challenge was to create a cohesive visual system that unified the report while giving each chapter a distinct identity and narrative tone. To address this, I developed a flexible design framework with tailored visual characteristics for each section and bespoke illustrations:

Chapter One: Europe: State of Play. A clean, authoritative design language focused on clarity and credibility. The restrained colour palette and structured layouts reinforce the legislative and policy-driven nature of the content.

Chapter Two: North American Parallel. Serving as a bridge between the first and third chapters, this section balances professionalism with a more dynamic visual approach. Subtle graphic elements introduce energy while maintaining the report’s analytical tone.

Chapter Three: Future Visions. Designed to communicate optimism and innovation, the final chapter adopts a brighter colour palette and more expressive visual elements. The result is an engaging and forward-looking perspective on the future of the cannabis industry.
