The Year in Language
The year 2020 was dominated by the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It turned our world upside down, but it also introduced new words and meanings into our everyday language.
TIME Magazine commissioned me to create a series of spot illustrations representing the language of 2020. The approach is ironic and intentionally lighthearted (sometimes it’s better to laugh than cry). Using a more direct and descriptive visual style to make each concept instantly clear and recognisable, I developed five illustrations for: Covidiot, Social Distancing, Quarantini, On Mute, Doomscrolling.
