AI Iconathon Icon Set

Representing concepts related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be challenging. From overused symbols like robots and brains to abstract ideas like ethics, bias, and machine learning, finding a visual language that accurately and inclusively communicates AI requires thoughtful exploration.

The Noun Project partnered with Essence for an AI-focused Iconathon, the first step in a collaborative design process aimed at creating a broader, more inclusive visual vocabulary for artificial intelligence and machine learning. More than 30 designers, engaged community members, and subject matter experts gathered at Essence’s San Francisco office to explore how AI concepts could be better represented through icons. Participants received insights from experts, including representatives from the Center for Human-Compatible AI, on the current state of AI, the importance of approaching the field as interdisciplinary and inclusive, and the need for more diverse visual references.

Following these discussions, participants developed initial concepts for icons representing complex topics such as AI training data, Natural Language Processing, AI ethics, and algorithmic bias. Building on the creative energy of the workshop, I was tasked with transforming 30 Iconathon sketches into a cohesive icon collection. These new icons expand the visual language of technology, providing designers and communities with more meaningful tools to communicate ideas around AI in a clear way.
