Accessibility Icon Collection

"We believe the visual resources we have access to should reflect the rich diversity of the world we live in, so that everyone has the opportunity to share and use more inclusive content."

In October 2024, The Noun Project joined forces with Disability:IN, the School of Visual Arts MFA Interaction Design Program, and Canva to host an Iconathon—a hands-on community workshop dedicated to designing icons that promote accessibility and inclusion.

Throughout the day, participants rolled up their sleeves and brought abstract concepts to life, visually defining terms like “accessible communication,” “curb-cut effect,” and “sensory-friendly environment.” Once sketches were complete, the group voted on the designs that best captured each idea, and teams shared the thought process behind their choices, revealing the care and creativity that went into every line and shape.

Building on the workshop’s creative energy, I’ve been tasked with transforming 25 of the Iconathon sketches into a cohesive icon collection, developed in the same style as the Redefining Women and Pride icon collections. These new icons will extend the language of accessibility and inclusion, giving designers and communities powerful tools to communicate more effectively and empathetically.
